Windsonde: Orran by shelzie Windsonde: Orran by shelzie
Name: Orran
Aery: Twistoult
Character Species Combination: Eurasian Tawny Owl (Strix aluco)/Siberian (Amur) Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
Rank: Young Gryphon
Gender: Male
Character Personality:
Awkward around most new faces, and rather shy as a result, young Orran usually prefers to keep to himself and his immediate family, and doesn't really have many friends. From an early age, Orran developed a keen interest in the wild flora flourishing in the Twistoult forests, and through trial and error and observation is teaching himself to cultivate plants - uprooting shrubs, collecting seeds, and planting them in a bed of earth he has collected in his quarters (to his mother's chagrin). So far his private garden has not been a great success, but he is learning with every experiment. If any youngster bothers to try to befriend the reclusive owlgryph, he or she will find a willing, cheerful, and loyal friend in Orran, albeit one whose chief topics of conversation include rare herbs and fruit, and the pollinating mechanisms of the beautiful dove-orchid, and other such things.

---

My first gryph character for :iconwindsonde:! I'll definitely be fleshing him out more as I complete the challenges and such for him. Excitement! He'll eventually grow out of his social awkwardness, for the most part at least, but for now he is a shy nerdy kid, with an interest in botany (which he won't grow out of). d'aww.

Awww, that Fledgeling one is just adorable! I like his colours very much, and there's so much expressoin in every drawing. I also like the soft shading-style you've used. And those large, brown eyes are so cute ^^ The adult-one's patterns are great together, and it's a very creative mix. It also looks very ... real in some way, unlike the most gryphon characters I've seen. I love him! ^^

Thanks so much!! I love both the owl and cat species in this mix so combining them was a fun exercise, and I'm very fussy about my animal designs looking natural so I am happy you appreciate that :D I really need to do more of this guy, he's sadly neglected since I unexpectedly got a job and my schedule blew up, but I hope to develop him and make him a part of #Windsonde soon :D

I loe the seamless way the two species have created a gryph character. It gives it lovely, pensive characteristics

Orran's adorable, the two base species natural patterns blend so well together that it helps give the character design a more natural look despite being a fantasy creature. Love the expressions, great use of big cute owl eyes, and fun cat ears. The nestling is adorable and I love the fledgling's pose of excitement, and I also like the slight bearded look of the adult.

Thanks much! I wasn't necessarily trying to find a pair that meshed well pattern-wise in my choice of the creatures, so I'm glad you think that they blend well together. I'm all about making designs look natural and not like two animals got stitched together, which can be challenging with something like a gryphon. Tawny owls do have those cute little feather beards, I had to incorporate!

Aww, he is absolutely precious! I like his colors, and those big dark eyes of his - it's interesting to see how his coloration changes as he grows from a nestling into a fledgling. I love seeing griffs that are unusual combinations of birds and cats. Looking forward to seeing more of this little guy!

Thanks much! :) He was fun to design but so frustrating because the tawny owl has markings that are really hard to simplify!

He's actually not so little considering he's half Siberian Tiger xD The griffs in this world all have to be relatively large. You should check out #Windsonde if you want to see some more cool griff designs and combinations!

Did you perhaps mean the top left instead where I drew the three heads? The top right picture is him as a nestling.

Fantastic gryph! so expressive and his species markings are so well combined. Love his nerdy plant habit! I'm sure the shanmans in the aery will value his experiments when he's perfected them.

Wow twistoult is really being spoilt for lovely new owl gryphs :giggle:

Can't ever get enough owl gryphs! I watched a documentary about British owls a loooong time ago and had plans to write a Harry Potter fanfic from an owl's point of view, with a tawny owl as the protagonist. This never came to be, but I've had a soft spot for tawnies since. :D Too bad they're so murderously hard to colour in a clean style, I'm glad you think I did a good job because trying to make sense of that plumage was frustrating!

Thanks so much for your encouragement, I look forward to exploring Windsonde with him!

yeah they are so tough! The dad of my windsonde gryph (milvus in grandesque) is a tawny owl gryph and I have such a hard time coluring him (he's called 'strix', I have no imagination!).

We have a nest of tawny owls at the bottom of our garden, its great to see them and hear them at night! They are such fiesty little characters, all the captive ones I know are really quirky too! [link] [link] [link] [link] :aww:

Thank you hun! I've been getting used to all his little details and he's fun to draw so far (if a bit intimidating to colour). I'm looking forward to drawing him more and my style of drawing him will probably evolve as I get more used to drawing birds. xD
